Established at the Royal College of Music in 1994, the Belcea Quartet is one of the leading quartets of the new generation. They consistently receive critical acclaim for their performances and possess an impressive discography. Their most recent release, a double disc of the late Schubert Quartets and the String Quintet with Valentin Erben for EMI, was nominated for a Gramophone Award.

The Belcea Quartet’s international engagements regularly take them to the Vienna Konzerthaus and Musikverein, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Brussels’ Palais des Beaux Arts, Lisbon’s Gulbenkian, Zurich’s Tonhalle, Stockholm’s Konzerthuset, Paris’ Chatelet, Milan’s Sala Verdi, New York’s Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall and San Francisco’s Herbst Theatre, and to festivals including Luberon, Istanbul, Trondheim, Lausanne, Salzburg, Mecklenburg, and the Schwarzenberg Schubertiade. In the UK they regularly appear at the Edinburgh, Aldeburgh, Perth, Bath and Cheltenham festivals, and at the Wigmore Hall where they were resident Quartet from 2001 to 2006. They regularly work with leading instrumentalists including Thomas Adès, Isabelle van Keulen, Michael Collins, Paul Lewis, Imogen Cooper, Yovan Markovitch, Piotr Anderszewski and Valentin Erben. Collaborations with singers have included performances of Fauré’s La Bonne Chanson with Anne Sofie von Otter at the Cité de la Musique, Respighi’s Il Tramonto with Angelika Kirchschlager at Wigmore Hall and with Ian Bostridge at New York’s Zankel Hall and Washington’s Library of Congress.

In the 2010/11 season, the Belcea Quartet gave the world premiere of Mark Anthony Turnage’s string quartet Twisted Blues with Twisted Ballad at Wigmore Hall, Cologne Philharmonie, Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the Vienna Konzerthaus. They also curated their own ‘Beethoven & Schubert: Final Years’ project with concerts in Aldeburgh, the Gulbenkian Grand Auditorium and Philharmonie Luxembourg, followed by their debut at the Late Night Proms. In the beginning of the 2011/12 season, the Belcea Quartet will embark on an ambitious survey of the complete string quartets by Beethoven with cycles of concerts planned in the UK, Germany, Austria, Sweden and the USA. With pianist Mihaela Ursuleasa, they will be giving the world premiere of Thomas Larcher’s Piano Quintet at Wigmore Hall, Vienna Konzerthaus and Dortmund Konzerthaus.

The Belcea Quartet won the Gramophone Award for best debut recording in 2001. Their discography for EMI includes Brahms’ String Quartet Op.51 No.1 and second String Quintet with Thomas Kakuska; Fauré’s La Bonne Chanson with Ian Bostridge; Schubert’s Trout Quintet with Thomas Adès and Corin Long; a double disc of Britten’s string quartets, which won a MIDEM Cannes Award; Mozart’s “Dissonance” and “Hoffmeister” quartets; and the complete Bartók quartets, for which the Quartet was awarded the title Chamber Music Ensemble of the Year by Germany's prestigious Echo Klassik Awards and nominated for a 2008 Gramophone Award.

Das Belcea Quartet, das 1994 am Londoner Royal College of Music gegründet wurde, zählt zu den renommiertesten Quartetten seiner Generation. Für seine Konzerte findet das Quartett stets regen Beifall, und es kann auf eine beeindruckende Diskografie verweisen. Seine erst kürzlich erschienene Aufnahme, eine Doppel CD mit Schuberts späten Quartetten und dem Streichquintett mit Valentin Erben für EMI, wurde für einen Gramophone Award nominiert.
Auf internationaler Ebene konzertiert das Belcea Quartet regelmäßig im Wiener Konzerthaus und Musikverein, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Palais des Beaux Arts Brüssel, Lissabons Gulbenkian, Tonhalle Zürich, Konzerthuset Stockholm, Chatelet in Paris, Sala Verdi in Mailand, New Yorker Carnegie Hall und Alice Tully Hall sowie San Franciscos Herbst Theatre. In der Saison 2010/2011 führte das Belcea Quartet die Weltpremiere von Mark Anthony Turnages Streichquartett „Twisted Blues with Twisted Ballad“ in der Wigmore Hall, der Kölner Philharmonie, dem Concertgebouw Amsterdam und dem Wiener Konzerthaus auf. Ebenso kuratierten sie ihr eigenes Projekt „Beethoven & Schubert: Final Years“ mit Konzerten in Aldeburgh, dem Gulbenkian Grand Auditorium und der Philharmonie Luxembourg, gefolgt von ihrem Debüt bei den Late Night Proms. Mit der Saison 2011/12 starten sie mit ihrem ambionierten Projekt der Aufführung aller Streichquartette Beethovens mit Konzertzyklen in Großbritannien, Deutschland, Österreich, Schweden und den USA. Gemeinsam mit der Pianistin Mihaela Ursuleasa wird das Belcea Quartet die Weltpremiere von Thomas Larchers Klavierquintett in der Wigmore Hall, dem Wiener Konzerthaus und dem Konzerthaus Dortmund zur Aufführung bringen.

Das Quartett hat im Jahr 2001 den „Gramophone Award“ für die beste Debüt-Aufnahme des Jahres erhalten. Für EMI Classics hat das Ensemble Einspielungen von Brahms’ Streichquartett Nr. 1 op. 51 und dessen Streichquintett Nr. 2 mit Thomas Kakuska, Faurés „La Bonne chanson“ mit Ian Bostridge, Schuberts „Forellenquintett“ mit Thomas Adès und Corin Long sowie eine Doppel-CD von Brittens Streichquartetten (MIDEM Cannes Award), Mozarts Dissonanzen-Quartett und Hoffmeister-Quartett, ebenso Bartóks gesamten Quartette, für die das Belcea Quartett von Deutschlands renommierten Echo Klassik Awards mit dem Titel „Chamber Music Ensemble of the Year“ ausgezeichnet und 2008 für einen Gramophone Award nominiert wurde, gemacht.
Das Belcea Quartet ist als Quartet in Residence an der Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London und seit der Saison 2010/2011 als Ensemble in Residence am Wiener Konzerthaus tätig.
