Founded in 1987 at the Liszt Conservatory of Music in Budapest, the Keller Quartet already achieved their international breakthrough in 1990 when winning all prizes and special awards at the Evian and Borciani Competitions.

Even though the quartet members have all completed their degrees as soloists, string quartet playing has always been their first choice. Three of the Liszt Conservatory’s most renowned professors took care of the young musicians and can be regarded as their mentors to this very day: Sandór Devich, András Mihály and György Kurtág, who also composes works for the quartet.

The Keller Quartet can be characterised by musical curiosity: curiosity about encounters with musicians and composers of all genres, curiosity about unknown works and new forms of programming, where unusual combinations develop their own dramatic tension. Exemplary for this is on the one hand their famous Bach/Kurtág program where parts of Bach’s „Art of the Fugue” are intertwined with works by György Kurtág or on the other hand the performance of the composition „Zwiegespräch” for string quartet and synthesizer by Kurtág father and son at the Vienna “Klangwochen” festival and at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam.

In search of connecting old and new, the Keller Quartet and the composer Jörg Widmann developed a new programming idea: Jörg Widmann composed his second string quartet, the „choral quartet” in relation to Joseph Haydn’s „Seven Last Words of our Saviour on the Cross”. During performance both pieces are interwoven, the Widmann quartet intersecting the Haydn two times between movements. The Keller Quartet premiered this programme at the „Sommerliche Musiktage“ chamber music festival in Hitzacker in July 2003 and performed it in various cities in Germany and Europe since then.

The Keller Quartet very often devices the programme of international chamber music days and short festivals where they also regularly invite their musical partners, such as Miklós Perényi, Dénes Várjon, Chen Halevi, Alexej Lubimov and Ewa Kupiec.

Their recording of the complete string quartets of Bartók for Erato caused a sensation at the time. The Keller Quartet has enjoyed links to ECM for some time now and has recorded the “Art of the Fugue” by Bach as well as the complete works for string quartet by Kurtág. The year 2003 year saw the release of a CD with Schnittke’s Piano Quintet (with Alexej Lubimov) and the last string quartet of Shostakovich. A recording of all Bartók Duos for violins by the two violin players of the quartet also appeared on ECM. At the end of the year 2004 a DVD with the Bach/Kurtág-programme has been released by EuroArts.

The quartet is invited since some years regularly to the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival of the Yale University. Highlights of the season 2009/10 were concerts in New York, Amsterdam, Zürich, Cologne and at the festival Heidelberger Frühling, where they were „Artists in Residence“.In 2010/11 they are performing at the Berliner Festspiele, at Helsinki and Vlaandern Festival.

New member of the quartet is the young violinist Zsófia Környei, who as the concertmaster of Concerto Budapest Orchestra is working since a long time together with András Keller, and was until now first violin in the Akadémia Quartet. She is also teaching at the Liszt Academy in Budapest and replaces János Pilz, who leaves the quartet after 23 years.

Gegründet 1987 an der Franz-Liszt Akademie in Budapest, gelang dem Keller Quartett bereits 1990 der internationale Durchbruch, als es sowohl beim Evian Wettbewerb als auch beim Borciani Wettbewerb alle Preise und Sonderpreise gewann.
Obschon jedes der Mitglieder sein Solistenstudium abschloss, räumten sie dem Streichquartett Priorität ein. Gleich drei der berühmtesten Professoren des Liszt Konservatoriums nahmen sich der jungen Musiker am Beginn ihrer Karriere an und zählen bis heute zu deren Mentoren: Sándor Devich, András Mihály und György Kurtág, der auch für das Quartett komponiert.

Das Keller Quartett zeichnet sich besonders durch seine musikalische Neugier aus: Neugier auf Begegnungen mit Musikern und Komponisten aller Richtungen, Neugier auf unbekannte Werke und auf Programmformen, die mit ungewöhnlichen Verbindungen neue Dramaturgien entwickeln. Beispielhaft dafür ist das Bach-Kurtág-Programm, in welchem Teile der „Kunst der Fuge" von Bach mit den Werken von György Kurtág verflochten sind oder die Aufführung der Komposition „Zwiegespräch“ für Streichquartett und Syntheziser von Kurtág Vater und Sohn bei den Klangwochen Wien und im Concertgebouw Amsterdam.

Auf der Suche nach Verbindungen zwischen Altem und Neuem entstand gemeinsam mit dem Komponisten Jörg Widmann ein Programmkonzept: Widmann komponierte sein zweites Streichquartett „Choralquartett“ in Bezug auf Josef Haydns „Sieben Letzte Worte des Erlösers am Kreuze". In der Aufführung werden diese Werke miteinander verflochten, Widmanns Quartett an zwei Stellen zwischen den Haydn-Sätzen gespielt. Das Keller Quartett brachte dieses Programm bei den „Sommerlichen Musiktagen Hitzacker" im Juli 2003 zur Uraufführung und spielte es mehrfach in Deutschland und Europa.

Das Keller Quartett gestaltet häufig Programme internationaler Kammermusik-Wochenenden und Kurzfestivals, zu denen es auch seine musikalischen Partner, darunter Miklós Perényi, Chen Halevi, Dénes Várjon, Alexej Lubimov und Ewa Kupiec regelmäßig einlädt.

Internationales Kritikerlob erhielt das Keller Quartett für die bei Erato erschienene Gesamt-Aufnahme der Bartók Quartette, die seinerzeit viel Aufsehen erregte. Seit längerem ist das Quartett dem Label ECM verbunden, für das sie u.a. die „Kunst der Fuge" von Bach, sämtliche Werke für Streichquartett von Kurtág, das Klavierquintett von Alfred Schnittke (mit Alexej Lubimov) und Schostakowitschs letztes Streichquartett aufnahmen. Ebenfalls bei ECM veröffentlichten die beiden Geiger des Quartetts ihre Einspielung aller Bartók-Duos. Ende des Jahres 2004 ist bei EuroArts eine DVD mit dem Bach-Kurtág-Programm erschienen.

Seit einigen Jahren ist das Quartett regelmäßig zu Gast beim Norfolk Chamber Music Festival der Yale University. Die Saison 2009/10 brachte sie nach unter anderem nach New York, Amsterdam, Zürich, Köln sowie zum Heidelberger Frühling, wo sie beim Streichquartettfest sozusagen „Artist in Residence“ waren. In der Saison 2010/11 sind sie bei den Berliner Festspielen, dem Helsinki Festival und beim Vlaandern Festival zu erleben. Neu dabei im Quartett ist die junge Geigerin Zsófia Környei, die seit langer Zeit als Konzertmeisterin des Orchesters Concerto Budapest eng mit András Keller zusammenarbeitet und bisher erste Violinistin im Akademia Quartett war sowie an der Liszt Akademie in Budapest unterrichtet. Sie ersetzt János Pilz, der das Quartett nach 23 Jahren verlässt.

Fondé en 1987 au Conservatoire Liszt à Budapest, le quatuor a su s'imposer sur la scène internationale dès 1990 en remportant, la même année, tous les prix réguliers et exceptionnels à la fois au Concours d'Evian et au Concours Borciani. La formation susmentionnée est celle du quatuor depuis avril 2002.

Si chacun des membres a achevé ses propres études de soliste, c'est au quatuor à cordes que tous avaient d'emblée accordé la priorité la plus absolue. Trois des plus célèbres professeurs du Conservatoire Liszt ont été depuis le début leurs mentors : Sandór Devich, András Mihály et György Kurtág, dont ce dernier crée aussi des œuvres pour le quatuor.

Le Quatuor Keller se distingue en particulier par sa curiosité, une curiosité qui est l'occasion de rencontres musicales avec des musiciens et compositeurs de toute orientation et génère de nouvelles formes programmatiques. Le groupement inhabituel des œuvres aux programmes de ce quatuor donne à ses concerts une qualité dramaturgique tout à fait exceptionnelle. Comme exemple devenu célèbre, on peut citer le programme Bach –Kurtág, dans le cadre duquel des parties de "L'Art de la Fugue" de Bach ont été entrelacées avec des œuvres de György Kurtág.

La recherche de nouvelles voies et de nouveaux liens entre l'ancien et le nouveau a donné naissance, en coopération avec Jörg Widmann, à une merveilleuse idée : pour accompagner les " Les Sept Dernières Paroles de Notre Sauveur sur la croix" de Josef Haydn, Jörg Widmann composera sept petits morceaux pour le Quatuor Keller que celui-ci jouera en guise de commentaires insérés entre les différents mouvements de l'oeuvre de Haydn.

Par ailleurs, le Quatuor Keller se charge aussi de la conception de week-ends consacrés à la musique de chambre ou de petits festivals, auxquels il invite d'autres musiciens comme Miklós Perényi, Chen Halevi, Alexej Lubimov ou Ewa Kupiec.

L’enregistrement des quatuors de Bartók pour Erato avait fait beaucoup de sensation dans son temps. Depuis de nombreuses années, le quatuor Keller entretient d'étroites relations avec le label ECM sous lequel il a enregistré "L'Art de la Fugue" de Bach et l'intégrale des œuvres pour quatuor de Kurtág. En mars 2002, a été publié un CD avec tous les duos de Bartók joués par les deux violonistes du Quatuor Keller. Sur son dernier CD (Février 2003), le quatuor a enregistré le quintette pour piano de Schnittke (avec A. Lubimov au piano) et le dernier quatuor pour cordes de Chostakovitch. Une DVD avec le programme Bach – Kurtág est apparu en 2004 chez EuroArts.

Depuis quelques années, le Quatuor Keller est invité régulierement au Norfolk Chamber Music Festival pour deux semaines de cours de maître et de concerts. Pendant la saison 2009/10 le quatuor joué á New York, Amsterdam, Cologne, Zürich et á la festival "Heidelberger Frühling" comme "Artiste en Residence". La saison 2010/11 ils commencent á les Berliner Festspiele, Helsinki Festival et Vlaandern Festival.
