Russian-born pianist Kirill Gerstein is one of today’s most intriguing young musicians. His masterful technique, musical curiosity, and probing interpretations have led to explorations of classical music and jazz, advanced degrees by the age of 20, a professorship in piano by the age of 27, and a full performance schedule at the world’s major music centers and festivals.
In January 2010, Gerstein was named recipient of the 2010 Gilmore Artist Award, only the sixth musician to have been so honored. The Gilmore Artist Award is made to an exceptional pianist who, regardless of age or nationality, possesses broad and profound musicianship and charisma and who desires and can sustain a career as a major international concert artist. He was also recognized with a 2010 Avery Fisher Career Grant in April 2010.
Highlights of Mr. Gerstein’s 2011-12 North American season include debuts with the New York Philharmonic and Seattle Symphony, as well as at the Aspen Music Festival and London’s Proms; re-engagements with the San Francisco, Detroit, Houston and Atlanta Symphonies, and also with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra; and recitals at New York’s 92nd St. Y, Cal Performances at UC Berkeley, London’s Wigmore Hall and in Vancouver, Miami and Sarasota.
Mr. Gerstein’s most recent engagements in North America include performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, and the Chicago, Atlanta, St. Louis, Dallas, Indianapolis, Baltimore, Milwaukee and Vancouver Symphonies; festival appearances at Chicago’s Grant Park, the Mann Music Center and in Saratoga with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Tanglewood with the Boston Symphony and Blossom with the Cleveland Orchestra; and recitals in Boston, New York’s Town Hall, Cincinnati, Detroit, and Washington’s Kennedy Center.
Kirill Gerstein has worked with such prominent European orchestras as the Munich, Rotterdam, and Royal Philharmonics, London’s Philharmonia, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Staatskapelle Dresden, Zurich’s Tonhalle, the Finnish and Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestras, WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. He has collaborated with the NHK Symphony Orchestra and Charles Dutoit in Tokyo and the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra in Caracas with Gustavo Dudamel. Gerstein has given recitals in Paris, Prague, Hamburg, London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, and the Liszt Academy in Budapest. He made his Salzburg Festival debut playing solo and two-piano works with András Schiff in 2008 and has also appeared at the Verbier, Lucerne and Jerusalem Chamber Music Festivals.
His first recording for Myrios Classics of recital works by Schumann, Liszt and Oliver Knussen was released in October 2010, followed by a duo recital disc with Tabea Zimmerman.
Born in 1979 in Voronezh, Russia, Mr. Gerstein attended one of the country’s special music schools for gifted children and taught himself to play jazz by listening to his parents’ extensiverecord collection. He arrived in the U.S. at 14 to continue his studies in jazz piano as the youngest student ever to attend Boston’s Berklee College of Music. However, he also continued working on the classical piano repertoire. Following his second summer at the Boston University program at Tanglewood, he decided to focus mainly on classical music and moved to New York City to attend the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Solomon Mikowsky and earned Bachelors and Masters of Music degrees. He continued his studies with Dmitri Bashkirov in Madrid and Ferenc Rados in Budapest.
In addition to the 2010 Gilmore Artist Award, Kirill Gerstein was awarded First Prize at the 2001 Arthur Rubinstein Piano Competition in Tel Aviv and a 2002 Gilmore Young Artist Award. He was also chosen as Carnegie Hall’s “Rising Star” for the 2005-06 season. He became an American citizen in 2003 and is currently a professor of piano at the Musikhochschule in Stuttgart.

Mit 14 Jahren nahm der im russischen Woronesch geborene Kirill Gerstein als jüngster Student der Geschichte sein Jazzstudium am Bostoner Berkeley College of Music auf. Später wandte er sich verstärkt dem klassischen Schwerpunkt zu und studierte in New York, Madrid und Budapest bei Solomon Mikowsky, Dmitri Bashkirov und Ferenc Rados.
Kirill Gerstein ist Preisträger des Arthur-Rubinstein-Wettbewerbs in Tel Aviv 2001. 2002 wurde er mit dem Gilmore Young Artist Award ausgezeichnet, in der Saison 2005/06 war er „Rising Star“ der New Yorker Carnegie Hall und erhielt 2010 den Avery-Fisher-Grant Preis. Durch die Auszeichnung mit dem Gilmore Award gelang Kirill Gerstein 2010 endgültig der Durchbruch in Nordamerika. Seither ist er regelmäßiger Gast u.a. beim Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra und dem Cleveland Orchestra. Im Sommer 2011 gab er sein Debüt mit New York Philharmonic.
Von den großen europäischen Bühnen ist Kirill Gerstein nicht mehr weg zu denken: Im Sommer 2011 gab Kirill Gerstein sein Debüt bei den Proms in London mit dem BBC Symphony Orchestra und konzertiert darüber hinaus zusammen mit Philharmonia London und dem Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In der Saison 2011/12 ist er in Deutschland mit dem MDR Leipzig, dem WDR Köln, dem SWR Freiburg, den Dresdner Philharmonikern und den Münchner Philharmonikern zu hören. Im Dezember 2012 steht eine Tournee mit dem SWR Sinfonieorchester zusammen mit Thomas Zehetmair und Michael Gielen und dem Berg Kammerkonzert an. Zu den Dirigenten, die Kirill Gerstein seit langem begleiten gehören u.a. Charles Dutoit und Semyon Bychkov.
Darüber hinaus ist Kirill Gerstein ein begeisterter Kammermusiker. Er arbeitet eng mit Tabea Zimmermann – das Duo hat bereits 2 gemeinsame Aufnahmen bei Myrios Classics veröffentlicht - Steven Isserlis und Emanuel Pahud. Mit Clemens Hagen und Kolja Blacher bildet er ein festes Trio mit jährlichen europaweiten Tournee, in 2011-12-13 u. an in Paris, London, Zürich, Berlin und Madrid. Zudem konzertiert Gerstein des Öfteren zusammen mit dem Hagen Quartett.
Eine enge musikalische Freundschaft verbindet ihn mit András Schiff, mit dem er unter anderem bei seinem Debüt bei den Salzburger Festspielen 2008 und 2011 in Ittingen zu erleben war.
Kirill Gersteins erste Solo-CD mit Werken von Liszt, Schumann und der erstmaligen Veröffentlichung von „Ophelia’s Last Dance“ des Komponisten Oliver Knussen, ebenfalls bei Myrios Classics erschienen, erregte 2011 große Aufmerksamkeit.
Kirill Gerstein hat eine Professur für Klavier an der Musikhochschule Stuttgart inne.
